Temporary Theatre

The ‘Temporary Theatre’ is designed as a response to a challenging site situated outside The Central School of Speech and Drama, Swiss Cottage, London.  The structure is intended as an interim rehearsal and performance space, whose form and design reflects the site constraints. Once future long term plans for the site are developed, the theatre is designed to be deconstructed and transported elsewhere, to continue acting as a theatre whose form describes its origin.

The theatre is made up of two main elements: an exoskeletal steel frame and an internal wooden carcass, enclosed by polycarbonate and fire retardant plywood panels. The frame is constructed from steel box beams, which are connected by steel nodal points. These nodal points resolve the complicated geometry between the steel beams and act as the connection points between the steel frame and the wooden carcass. This allows the frame and the carcass to be read as two separate but connected elements. The steel frame describes the overall outline of the theatre and the sight lines initially found at the site, while the wooden carcass describes the softer volume of the theatre.
